Newsday Tuesday: Cynthia Nixon brings WIT to Broadway

Cynthia Nixon

According to, Cynthia Nixon will star in the Broadway premiere of  Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Wit.  The play follows a poetry professor (played by Nixon) fighting cancer through experimental methods. Edson’s play, as might be determined from the title, is a humorous look at a tragic subject. And if anyone is fit to play a woman struggling through personal tragedy, it would be Nixon, who won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in another Pulitzer Prize-winning play, David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole.

Playwright Margaret Edson

With all the struggles women playwrights face in getting produced, it’s always a joy to hear about one making the leap from a successful off-Broadway run to the Broadway stage, especially with such tremendous talent leading the way. Come January 2012, let’s hope Margaret Edson feels the love and support of her work that she deserves.
